The Beginning
My name is Karen.
And I couldn't find clothes that felt like me.
I'm a Black British woman, born in the UK to Caribbean parents — and for most of my life, I couldn't find clothes that felt like me. Not really me.
There was plenty of fashion out there. But it either ignored where I came from entirely, or it leaned into African heritage so heavily it felt more like costume than clothing.
I wanted something in between. Something authentically rooted — in the fabrics, the colours, the shapes of the Africa my ancestors came from — but completely modern. Completely wearable. Completely mine.
Rooted in culture. Made for now.
Three ideas at the heart of everything we make
The Fabric of Our Story
Our name, Sanyan, comes from the Yoruba word for a treasured woven cloth. Like the fabric itself, the brand weaves together what was, what is, and what we choose to carry forward.
Inspired by Two Worlds
We draw inspiration from African prints and patterns — rich in culture and symbolism — and pair them with modern tailoring. The result honours heritage while fitting effortlessly into everyday life.

Many of us grew up knowing we were from somewhere, without quite knowing where. The connection was distant, the details blurred by generations. But something remained.
A pull toward certain colours. A recognition in certain fabrics and shapes. A sense, when you wear them, of something quietly clicking into place.
We are not defined by what was lost. We are modern women — working, living, celebrating, building. Sanyan is for women who carry all of that — and want their clothes to carry it too.

Sometimes that means authentic African textiles. Sometimes denim, linen or duchess satin, cut in a silhouette that carries the same spirit. Sometimes it is purely colour — the deep, vivid, unapologetic palette of the continent. Whatever form it takes in each piece, the soul is always present.
The Name
A Yoruba word for
a treasured woven cloth.
Sanyan comes from the Yoruba language — used by the Yoruba people of West Africa to describe a fine, precious fabric, woven with care and meant to be kept.
Like the fabric itself, the brand is about weaving together what was, what is, and what we choose to carry forward. Every piece holds that intention.
It is not about a single culture, a single country, or a single story. It is about the thread that connects all of them — and the woman who wears it today.
